To welcome my new niece home from China on Sunday, I whipped up a crayon roll. I wasn’t able to give it to her in person but my mom said she was mesmerized by all of the crayons and how they slip in their own pocket.
I see these crayon “cozies” holders everywhere and they are easy to make. If you don’t want to have to figure out the measurements, here is a tutorial on how I made mine.
I used two pieces of fabric 5 X 16 1/2 inches (for the outside and inside), one 6 X 16 1/2 inch piece of fabric folded in half lengthwise and pressed (for the pocket), one piece of lightweight fusible interfacing 5 X 16 1/2 inches, one package of ric rac trim, 30 inches of ribbon, one package of 16 count crayons.
Iron the interfacing to the wrong side of the 5 X 16 1/2 piece of fabric that you want to be on the inside.
Line up the bottom edges of the folded piece and the piece with interfacing, pin together. Starting over from the edge 1 1/4 inches sew lines parallel with the edge starting from the top of the crayon pocket, back-stitching at the top to reinforce. Sew the lines one inch apart across the pocket. You will have 1 1/4 inches on each side.
If you want to use ric rac, pin it around the edge as shown. Fold the ribbon in half and pin it on the edge. On the one I didn’t use ric rac I did a blanket stitch around the edge when finished.
Pin remaining piece of 5 X 16 1/2 inch fabric right sides together with the pocket piece. Sew around edges with 1/4 inch seam. Leave about 3 inches across bottom for turning.
Trim corners, turn, press and top stitch being careful to catch all layers of the opening to close.
Welcome home Faith! We are so happy to have you join our family! How very lucky we are indeed to have you!
So in honor of my new niece Faith, an entry “crayon cozy” to this months Whiplash.

Wow – what a cute gift. Thanks very much for the tutorial!
April 25, 2007 at 2:08 pm |
That’s so cute and wonderful fabric choices. You should enter it in the Whiplash contest, a crayon cozy.
April 25, 2007 at 4:19 pm |
Another project for my to-do list. I know a lot of little ones who would enjoy one of these. It’s the kind of thing I know I could figure out how to do but so much easier when someone kindly provides a tutorial (I probably wouldn’t have thought of using the ric-rac though). And adaptable to other uses (crochet hooks, knitting needles, lacemaking bobbins…). Thank you!
April 25, 2007 at 5:36 pm |
That’s adorable! Also going on my to-do list.
Congrats on the new niece! We recently welcomed a new nephew, from Ethiopia. so exciting!

Glad you finished the crayon roll after all!! It is very very cute. I’m sure your new little niece loves it!
April 28, 2007 at 1:26 pm |
The Crayon roll is too cute and such a great idea. I have a soon-to-be 4 year old and I think she’d love one of these. I’m just re-learning to sew so you know I’m really looking forward to this. Thank you for being an inspiration!
April 29, 2007 at 5:20 pm |
oooh, I was just looking for a new crafty thing to make and this will be it. I have seen them around but I do much better with a tutorial than figuring it out on my own…only so much time for crafts each week for me and I don’t want to use it all messing about trying to figure out HOW to do something and then find out I got it all wrong…. I’ll save that for when my littles are bigger!

Is it me, or does a Crayola Crayon box serve the same purpose – to hold crayons. And it has a lid that closes so you can carry it around.
January 9, 2011 at 7:12 am |
If you love to be creative and make things, it’s easy to understand why a crayon roll is a lot more fun than a box. I know several little girls that would rather have a crayon roll!
November 6, 2007 at 8:01 am |
I think this is really cute I need to make one for my daughter
November 7, 2007 at 7:28 am |
I totally agree with Jamie- you ought to put this on youcanmakethis.com and make your fortune (although I loved the free tutorial)! And for Confused… well, the box serves the same purpose… until the first time my toddler tried to get the crayons out on her own and then shreds the box to pieces. This is a really cute idea for in a diaper bag or purse to take to restaurants and that when you go out with your kids! And the crayons don’t fall out b/c you ROLL it up, and then tie it up with the ribbon!

December 3, 2007 at 5:50 pm |
Hello — Faith again! I just made a roll to match for the
Mama and it is for her sewing projects. Instead of making
areas for crayons in the center of the roll I sewed a
padded pin cushion with pins and needles. This can be
taken with squares or pieces of fabric for squares and also
it fits over the arm of the chair when sewing. I made pockets to hold the scissors (small ones) and some tissues.
Viola!

Thanks for putting this up, I just went through your entire blog and you are awesome! I have it bookmarked now. I am making these for Christmas for my 3 kids and my 2 nieces. Except I am making them for colored pencils as we live in AZ and crayons melt in the car. I am thinking colored pencils are normally 7″ long – but I would make the front panel just long enough to secure the pencils – because they get shorter as they get used. Thank you again!!!! God Bless!!!! Merry Christmas everyone!!!

[…] My DD’s attend danish school once or twice a month. They really don’t like to go – they tell me each time, but appear to have fun whenever we get there. I am on the committee, so we ‘have’ to go, and I really enjoy catching up with my danish friends. This year I decided to bribe the girls, they got a new pink folder each, new textas, a gold texta (which are priced possessions when you are 7 and 8, even more so than the pinks) and I made a new rolled-up pencil case for them. It worked I only had enough red-and-white-danish-coloured fabric for one, so they are sharing. The next one need the slots for the pencils to be a little wider, and the ribbon needs to be wider too, to make it easier for little hands to tie. I will make one for myself too, for the knitting needles and the crochet hooks. I used this tutorial. […]

Yours was the best tutorial I found and I whipped up 3 of these this morning for 3 of my granddaughters. Added some new crayons and xmas coloring books. Was with them later in the day and they loved them so much. My daughter was happy to, something to keep the little ones busy 🙂 Didn’t have any rick rack, just used what I had on hand. I make my own fabric gift bags every xmas so had lots of scrap fabric left over. Used 3 different pieces and they turned out great. Just wanted to say thanks!
December 21, 2009 at 2:47 pm |
Thanks for the tute! I needed a last-minute Christmas gift, so I came across this and adapted it to make a hair accessory pouch for a friend with really long hair. I made the whole thing taller and curved the pocket (finishing the edges with bias tape), and made the sections different widths. She can keep hairsticks, hair clips, a comb, a small bottle of hair oil/serum etc in it; and I added a orizontal strip of interfaced fabric on which she can hang bobby pins. Then on the outside I put another little pocket, and made a fabric “ribbon” to tie it up. Hopefully she’ll like it!
